About Us

Rockall Solutions pulls together the skills and experience of those who worked for Aquamarine Power Ltd and its partners in the development of the Oyster wave energy converter. This ten years of experience includes taking the original Oyster concept from wave tank testing, numerical modelling and engineering design through to the manufacture, installation and operation of two full scale Oyster prototypes at the European Marine Energy Centre. This experience is unique in the industry and the knowledge gained on this pathway is invaluable to present and future developers alike.

At Rockall Solutions we aim to use our skills and experience to guide our clients through the development process in an efficient and cost effective manner. Please contact us for more information.

Dr Alan Henry

Dr Alan Henry

Dr Alan Henry is a mechanical engineer who has over 10 years’ experience in the wave energy sector. Alan obtained his PhD from Queen’s University Belfast where he undertook a large experimental and numerical programme to investigate the hydrodynamics of Oscillating Wave Surge Converters (OWSCs). He used his findings to optimise the dimensions of the OWSC to maximise power capture. Alan was Senior Research Engineer at Aquamarine Power Ltd. where he led various projects including the definition of fatigue and extreme load cases for the Oyster wave energy converter and analysis of data from the Oyster 800 prototype which was operated at EMEC. Alan founded Rockall Solutions in 2015 and has worked with a wide range of clients to assess, optimise and progress their wave energy converter concepts.

Dr Joseph van ’t Hoff

Dr Joseph van ’t Hoff

Dr Joseph van ’t Hoff has over 12 years’ experience in modelling fluid flows, wave – structure interaction and hydraulic Power Take-Off systems. He obtained a PhD from Queen’s University Belfast where he developed a hydrodynamic numerical model of the Oyster wave energy converter. After his PhD he was Senior Numerical Modeller and Research Manager at Aquamarine Power where he validated his numerical model against full scale prototype data from Oyster 800 which was operated at EMEC.
